CS2 demo download incomplete: how to fix it
"Download incomplete" means Counter-Strike 2 could not fetch the whole replay file for that match. Valve has not published an explanation of the message.
The fastest fix: copy the match sharing code and let a browser viewer fetch the demo for you. If Valve returns no demo for that code, the recording no longer exists and no tool can get it back.
Why does CS2 say download incomplete?
The game asked for the replay and did not receive all of it. That is all the message tells you.
There are two very different reasons behind it:
- The recording is still there, but this download failed. A second attempt by another route can work.
- There is no recording to download. Valve's match service returns no demo address for the match. Retrying changes nothing.
You cannot tell which one you have from the in-game button. The share code route below tells you directly.
| What you see | Likely meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Download incomplete on a recent match | This download failed | Use the share code route |
| The demo is not downloading at all | No file was served | Use the share code route to check |
| Share code resolves, but no demo | The recording is gone | Stop retrying |
| A file arrived, but it stops early | A truncated file | Delete it and fetch again |
How to fix download incomplete on a CS2 demo
Skip the in-game download. Hand the match sharing code to a service that fetches the demo on a server.
- Copy the match sharing code. In Counter-Strike 2, open Watch → Your Matches, pick the match and copy its share code. It starts with
CSGO-. - Paste it into Memorin. Open the demo viewer, sign in with Steam and paste the code into the import box.
- Let the server fetch it. The server asks Valve's match service for the demo address and downloads the compressed
.dem.bz2file itself. Nothing large goes through your connection. - Read the answer. Either the match opens in 2D (3D is PRO), or you get a clear "no demo for this match" message. That message means the recording is gone.
The replay then plays in your browser. The file never has to go into your csgo folder, and CS2 does not need to be running. The watch without downloading guide covers the other link types: FACEIT matchroom links, Leetify match links and direct demo URLs.
Why is my CS2 demo not downloading at all?
Usually because the match has no recording left to serve. When Valve's match service answers a share code without a demo address, there is nothing to download from anywhere. That answer does not change on a retry.
Valve has also switched demo recording off before. Its release notes for 28 September 2023 say it "disabled CSTV and demo recording temporarily" to free server capacity. A match played while recording is off has no demo at all.
The practical rule: import the matches you care about soon after you play them. Connecting your match history makes that automatic. See match sharing codes and Premier demos.
Can I play a half-downloaded CS2 demo?
Sometimes, in the game. Valve's release notes for 28 January 2025 added "fallback logic to allow playing incomplete demo files, either copied from an ongoing live match or recovered after a game server crash".
That does not bring back the missing part. A cut-off file holds the match only up to where it stops. If you need the whole match, delete the partial file and fetch the demo again by share code.
.dem does not repair it. A real CS2 demo starts with the bytes PBDEMS2. Open the file in a text editor: if you see HTML or nothing readable on the first line, it is not a demo.Does this happen with FACEIT demos too?
The in-game "download incomplete" message belongs to Valve's matchmaking downloads. A FACEIT demo comes from the FACEIT matchroom instead, as a compressed file. Memorin reads .dem, .dem.gz, .dem.zst and .dem.bz2 as they are, so you do not need to unpack it first. Pasting the matchroom link also works. See watching FACEIT demos online.
If the demo downloads but CS2 then refuses it, that is a different problem. Demo file is incompatible with this game version covers it.
